California Chrome Wins The Kentucky Derby

California Chrome won the 140th running of Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville Saturday. The horse was favored to win, despite quirks that set him apart from his more traditional competitors. "Derby dreams do come true," an announcer said after the race. As NBC Sports reports: "California Chrome, who gained fame for his rags-to-riches tale outside the traditional rise of champion thoroughbreds, originally was a 5-2 morning line favorite, ultimately going off as a 2-1 favorite at post time." Chrome's trainer, 77-year-old Art Sherman, became the oldest Derby trainer to win, The Associated Press reports. Sherman told the AP he thought jockey Victor Espinoza rode the horse perfectly: "I never gave him any instructions. I just said, 'You know this horse, go for it.' U.S. jury orders smartphone maker Samsung to pay Apple $120 million

(Reuters) - A U.S. jury on Friday ordered Samsung  Electronics Co Ltd to pay $119.6 million to  Apple Inc , far less than Apple had sought and marking a big loss for the iPhone maker in the latest round of their globe-spanning mobile patent litigation. During the month-long trial in a San Jose, California, federal court, Apple accused Samsung of violating patents on smartphone features including universal search, while Samsung denied wrongdoing. On Friday, the jury found the South Korean smartphone maker had infringed two Apple patents. Apple and Samsung have been litigating around the world for three years. Jurors awarded the iPhone maker about $930 million after a 2012 trial in San Jose, but Apple failed to persuade U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh to issue a permanent injunction against the sale of Samsung phones in the United States. Berkshire Profit Slips 3.8% on Insurance, Derivatives

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK/A) said first-quarter profit fell 3.8 percent on reduced earnings from Chairman Warren Buffett’s derivatives wagers and underwriting at insurance businesses. Net income slipped to $4.71 billion, or $2,862 a share, from $4.89 billion, or $2,977, a year earlier, the Omaha, Nebraska-based company said today in a statement. Operating earnings, which exclude some investment results, were $2,149 a share, missing the $2,171 averageestimate of three analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Buffett has been shifting the company toward businesses like energy and railroads that provide opportunities for billions of dollars in capital spending and relatively stable returns tied to the growth of the U.S. economy. Actor Bob Hoskins, known for 'Roger Rabbit,' dies at 71

(CNN)  -- Bob Hoskins, the pugnacious British actor known for playing gangsters, tough guys and working-class gentlemen in such films as "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," "The Long Good Friday" and "Mermaids," has died, publicist Clair Dobbs said Wednesday. Hoskins was 71. His passing comes nearly two years after he retired from acting following a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. Hoskins was perhaps best known for 1988's live-action and animation hybrid "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." In the comedy, he played detective Eddie Valiant, who hates "toons" -- cartoon figures who live in a separate showbiz world bordering Valiant's 1940s Los Angeles -- and takes up the task of proving the innocence of the cartoon title character, accused of murder.
